The Woodwright's Shop

If you're into traditional woodworking methods take a look at The Woodwright's Shop: A Practical Guide to Traditional Woodcraft by Roy Underhill. The author "brings to woodworking the intimate relationship with wood that craftsmen enjoyed in the days before power tools."

We've added the book to our Google Library but it could also be a suitable Christmas gift for someone with an interest in traditional carpentry.

Take a preview look by scrolling below.

Wood Sculpture

Here's a wood sculpture by Gerhard Mayer.

When you use wood in carpentry it is for a practical purpose, like making a table or a seat or even a spoon - an object that makes life easier. But sometimes you can use wood to create art like this sculpture below. You might not be able to do anything with it, but it can enhance a feel of a room and people can take pleasure (via talking about it or via thoughtful contemplation) from this unusual wooden design.

We'd like to know how long it took Gerhard to make it and what tooling did he use? How many saw blades does it take to make such a gigantic sculpture?

Walt Whitman - Wrote of Woodwork and Tools

Walt Whitman is a poet who wrote about America. And in the poem segment below, part 3 of Song of the Broad Axe, he writes of woodworking and using tools.

The log at the wood-pile, the axe supported by it;
The sylvan hut, the vine over the doorway, the space clear’d for a garden,
The irregular tapping of rain down on the leaves, after the storm is lull’d,
The wailing and moaning at intervals, the thought of the sea,
The thought of ships struck in the storm, and put on their beam ends, and the cutting away of masts;
The sentiment of the huge timbers of old-fashion’d houses and barns;
The remember’d print or narrative, the voyage at a venture of men, families, goods,
The disembarkation, the founding of a new city,
The voyage of those who sought a New England and found it—the outset anywhere,
The settlements of the Arkansas, Colorado, Ottawa, Willamette,
The slow progress, the scant fare, the axe, rifle, saddle-bags;
The beauty of all adventurous and daring persons,
The beauty of wood-boys and wood-men, with their clear untrimm’d faces,
The beauty of independence, departure, actions that rely on themselves,
The American contempt for statutes and ceremonies, the boundless impatience of restraint,
The loose drift of character, the inkling through random types, the solidification;
The butcher in the slaughter-house, the hands aboard schooners and sloops, the raftsman, the pioneer,
Lumbermen in their winter camp, day-break in the woods, stripes of snow on the limbs of trees, the occasional snapping,
The glad clear sound of one’s own voice, the merry song, the natural life of the woods, the strong day’s work,
The blazing fire at night, the sweet taste of supper, the talk, the bed of hemlock boughs, and the bear-skin;
—The house-builder at work in cities or anywhere,
The preparatory jointing, squaring, sawing, mortising,
The hoist-up of beams, the push of them in their places, laying them regular,
Setting the studs by their tenons in the mortises, according as they were prepared,
The blows of mallets and hammers, the attitudes of the men, their curv’d limbs,
Bending, standing, astride the beams, driving in pins, holding on by posts and braces,
The hook’d arm over the plate, the other arm wielding the axe,
The floor-men forcing the planks close, to be nail’d,
Their postures bringing their weapons downward on the bearers,
The echoes resounding through the vacant building;
The huge store-house carried up in the city, well under way,
The six framing-men, two in the middle, and two at each end, carefully bearing on their shoulders a heavy stick for a cross-beam,
The crowded line of masons with trowels in their right hands, rapidly laying the long side-wall, two hundred feet from front to rear,
The flexible rise and fall of backs, the continual click of the trowels striking the bricks,
The bricks, one after another, each laid so workmanlike in its place, and set with a knock of the trowel-handle,
The piles of materials, the mortar on the mortar-boards, and the steady replenishing by the hod-men;
—Spar-makers in the spar-yard, the swarming row of well-grown apprentices,
The swing of their axes on the square-hew’d log, shaping it toward the shape of a mast,
The brisk short crackle of the steel driven slantingly into the pine,
The butter-color’d chips flying off in great flakes and slivers,
The limber motion of brawny young arms and hips in easy costumes;
The constructor of wharves, bridges, piers, bulk-heads, floats, stays against the sea;
—The city fireman—the fire that suddenly bursts forth in the close-pack’d square,
The arriving engines, the hoarse shouts, the nimble stepping and daring,
The strong command through the fire-trumpets, the falling in line, the rise and fall of the arms forcing the water,
The slender, spasmic, blue-white jets—the bringing to bear of the hooks and ladders, and their execution,
The crash and cut away of connecting wood-work, or through floors, if the fire smoulders under them,
The crowd with their lit faces, watching—the glare and dense shadows;
—The forger at his forge-furnace, and the user of iron after him,
The maker of the axe large and small, and the welder and temperer,
The chooser breathing his breath on the cold steel, and trying the edge with his thumb ...

Armadillo Cutter Block

Gerrymet, as a UK tooling supplier, aim to stock products for carpenters and joiners that make woodcutting and other related tasks more efficient. We look for ways we can save you time and money.

An example of this is the Armadillo Cutter Block, which is designed to overcome the costs of knives and limiters for short run non-standard profiles. Not only do blocks save on knife costs but they also increase the quality. This greatly reduces noise and provides large depths of profile in excess of 45mm. The Armadillo Cutter Block is also made in the UK.

If this or any other tooling is of interest, please visit the Gerrymet website or telephone 01543 378 805.

Woodworkers Fighting Cancer

We've found out about a passionate woodworker called Marc Spagnuolo. Also known as the Wood Whisperer, he posts a lot of How-To carpentry videos online.

But the thing that has motivated us to post this is because Marc and his Wood Whisperer colleagues have raised more than $80000 for cancer charities by various woodwork-related projects they have organised since 2010.

This is one of many examples of how woodworking brings people together positively to make things and do things like this charitable cause. To read more about Marc and the charity project, you can visit his website here - Wood Whisperer

Westgate-On-Sea by John Betjeman

Like woodwork, poetry is a craft.

We've found a John Betjeman poem, Westgate-On-Sea, that mentions woodwork. Betjeman, who looks happy in the photo below, was an English poet, the UK's Poet Laureate from 1972 until his death in 1984 - the year after Gerrymet began as a tooling and saw blades supplier.

On this balcony I stand,
White the woodwork wriggles round me,
Clocktowers rise on either hand.

DIY - Make your own Shelves

Instead of queueing at IKEA for a flat-pack shelves, how about getting your out tools like a drill, a spirit level and a screwdriver, make your own shelves?

We've found a simple step-by-step guide in the link below which gives you instructions on how to set up your own floating shelves. The feature says "Pre-made floating shelves can be bought at many big box retailers but they aren’t always sturdy, made of solid wood or the size to fit your unique space." That is true and by making your own shelves you will create something for your home that is high-quality, long-lasting and made by you! It beats reading an IKEA instructions manual. Check the shelf-making instructions in the link below.

How More Can Be Less - Saw Sharpening

In our field of saw sharpening, the above phrase (less is more) applies to numerous applications. One in particular is the sharpening of Panel Sizing sets.

Below is an example of what we have achieved.

Customer:  Furniture manufacturer M.F.C (Melamine Faced Chipboard) material.

Application: Altendorf Panel Saw.

Blade Size: 300 x 96 teeth x 30 bore x 3.2 kerf Main Saw + 120 x 24 teeth x 20 bore x 3.1/4.3 Scorer.

Quantity of sets serviced: Average of 6 sets per week by another sharpening company @ £10.00 per set making a total cost of £60.00 per week

Having had dialogue with this potential customer, we believed we could offer a more cost effective solution for the sharpening of Panel Saws and so we proceeded to sharpen their existing sets for a period of 6 weeks.

They averaged 4 sets per week @ £12.00 per set making a total cost of £48.00 per week. So there you have it - more can be less. Furthermore, this particular client now needs fewer sets in the system resulting in further savings.

At Gerrymet, we endeavour to give our customers the best and most cost effective tooling solutions. This is achieved by the continued investment in people and technology.

If this is of interest to you, please do not hesitate to contact our sales team on 01543 378805 to discuss your requirements.

Tool Design - Plane by Stanley

Brief History of Circular Saw Blades

Circular saws and saw blades are used in saw mills. Here's a brief history (from Wiki) of the invention of the circular saw blade.

A Southampton man, Walter Taylor, in 1762 built a saw mill. Wiki says: "Descriptions of his machinery there in the 1790s show that he had circular saws."

A sailmaker called Samuel Miller, also of Southampton obtained a patent in 1777 for a saw windmill. However the specification for this only mentions the form of the saw incidentally, probably indicating that it was not his invention.

Three years later in 1780 a man called Gervinus in Germany invented the circular saw.

A large circular saw in a saw mill is said to have been invented in 1813 by Tabitha Babbitt after she noted the inefficiency of the traditional saw pits used by the sawyers in her community and sought an improvement - athough, it says on Wiki, that this is now mostly discredited.
