Build a Canoe in 2019

This could be your first project in 2018. Make a canoe. By the time you've finished the project, it'll be spring and with the weather warmer it'll be the perfect time to get out on the water.

A Counter Top from Red Oak Wood

Here is a recently uploaded video from Matthew Cremona who makes fine furniture with both hand and power tools. His YouTube profile says: "I start with cutting down a tree. My designs have a clean straight line look but I also really enjoy building period pieces."

In this video he makes a counter top for his parent's laundry room. His father asked Matthew to make the counter from any kind of wood and in this case he used red oak slabs.

It's a great question. What do you do with your sawdust? In 2018 environmental issues are now more important than ever. So it's a good idea to recycle what you throw away each day. Whether it's plastic, glass or even food that decomposes, people and businesses should recycle more.

And if you work with wood and produce a lot of sawdust, there are a number of things you can do with the sawdust instead of binning it.

Some people sprinkle it over their plants and that helps fertilise the soil. Or a good idea for this time of year is you could spray paint the sawdust and make fake snow.

We naturally follow the individual needs of each customer and return your tooling or saw blade to you in the shortest time possible.

New Tooling: Bollinder Sets

The new tooling we now supply are Gerrymet are bollinders @ £1550.00 per set (exc. VAT).  

If this is what you neeed, the spec is 180 dia x Z=6 x 60 bore Tongue & Groove V One Side 

They're manufactured to order and it's around  5/6 working weeks for Gerrymet's delivery time.

By a ratio of 4:1, the bollinder sets will out-perform a Brazed Tip Set.  This Includes run times and a better finish, better run times and the tooling lifespan will be much longer.

Due to the way the tool is formed the bollinder tools can be sharpened at least three times more than a Brazed Tip Set.  They also finish a lot better due to the accuracy of the forming process and they can achieve higher feed rates.

For example:

4 wing Tools   20 - 30 metres per minute.

6 Wing Tools  40 - 50 metres per minute.

8 Wing Tools  60 -70 metres per minute.

The feed rates depend also on the timber used, the moisture content and one or two other variables.

Lumberjack Woodcutting is a Sport

As well as an art, woodcutting is also a sport. Read about the woman who won the 2018 Stihl Timbersports Women’s Division Championship. 2018 is the first year that women competed on the same stage as the male athletes. The sport pits competitors against one another in timed wood-chopping events.

The Stihl Timbersports Series is a series of competitions based on wood-chopping. To compete against each other the athletes use axes and saws, using the same methods as lumberjacks. The competition was founded in 1985.

England's World Cup Woodwork Moments

Of course we'll be supporting England during the 2018 World Cup that kicks off this week in Russia.
